The Clinical Assessment on the effect of Cefoxitin sodium (MEFOXIN^(¢ç)) on the Acute Infection in Childhood

Abstract
Forty children with acute infection including 10 with pharyngotonsillitis; 20 with pneumonia, 6 with urinary tract infection, and 4 with abscess were treated with a new semisynthetic broad spectrum cephalosporin antibiotics, Cefoxitin sodium. Cefoxitin sodium was administered intravenously 30-40mg/kg a day in 4 divided dose for 5?14 days. Therapeutic effects were as follows Exellent clinical results were obtained in 26 cases(62.5%), good in 11 cases(27.5%) and poor in 3 cases(7.5%). The overall clinical efficacy rates were 92.5%. Two(4.8%) positive skin tests were observed out of fourty-two patients. Four(10.0%) patients among 40 treated patients showed mild side effects such as slight elevation of transaminases and mild urticarial skin rash. These results suggest that cefoxitin sodium is effective and tolerable with less side effects for childhood acute infections
